Gary Allen Smith is Gasworks Studio's Chief Artist. Gary graduated from the University of San Diego with a BA in Visual Arts and Computer Science. Coupled with an AS degree in Math and Chemistry, these cross disciplines give him a rare right/left brain insight resulting in skills that are a unique blend of art and science.
One can take a bit of pigment, canvas, wood, oils, smear them around just right, placing them on the mantel and some will come into the room and exclaim, "Wow! that's aunt Martha!" Well, no not exactly... It looks a lot like her but it isn't her. Similarly, one can take some silicon, plastic, metal, electricity, algorithms, smear them around just right on a desk and some one will say, "Wow! That's a spread sheet." Well again, it looks and behaves like one, but it really isn't one. Both are convincing illusions that evoke real world analogies and responses.
You see, Science and Art are much the same. They both deal with information structuring and the invoking of responses based on illusionary or perceptory input. It's just a matter of which part of the brain is involved.
